We arrived at Canakkale at 7am on Tuesday 5th May and after breakfast took the tour to the Gallipoli Peninsular and visited the First World War Battlefields and, what is now, ANZAC and Turkish War Cemetaries, unfortunately the tour did not extend to the British cemetaries a few miles or so further on. Our guide could have been better and generally I was disappointed though the visit was one of awed respect and sadness that so many lives had been lost, on ALL sides. We visited ANZAC Cove, the Lone Pine Cemetary, and the New Zealand Memorial. At 1600 hours, after having gone back aboard at 1500, we sailed and cruised along the shoreline, past Anzac Cove and the invasion beaches duly passing the impressive British Monument on the hill. A most interesting and sobering day.
