![]() The Sydney office of Macdonald, Hamilton and Company was situated in the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand Building at 247 George Street. A building was constructed by the Inchcape family for the Melbourne Office and named Peninsular House, and was located at 311 Collins Stree, Melbourne. At present there does not appear to be a photograph of this building. |

Opposite: The Union Steamship Company’s Niagara which was sunk by a German mine off Auckland New Zealand on 19th June 1940. Of her cargo of 590 gold bars, weighing nearly eight tons, valued at £2, 500,000, 555 ingots valued at £2, 379,000 was salvaged by the syndicate comprising the partners of Macdonald Hamilton & Co., the partners of Gibbs Bright and Co. and William Crosby and Co. Pty. Ltd.,which was named United Salvage Pty. Ltd. The story of the salvage is told by James Taylor in Gold from the Sea, The Epic Story of the Niagara’s Bullion. (Sydney, 1943, Reprint 1947)
